The Gurley Pub

In December 2024, the Royal Hotel at Gurley was lost to fire, a devastating night for the small town and its neighbours. From surrounding paddocks, residents first noticed a plume of smoke rising into the sky. It was the first sign that something was wrong. Within hours, the flames had consumed the century-old pub, marking the end of a beloved gathering place and a chapter of local history.

This work, Gurley Pub’s Last Stand (2025), captures what remains: a proud chimney, scorched corrugated iron and the fallen hotel sign. Amongst the ashes lie countless stories of laughter, music, family meals, and friendships built across generations.

Part of my Last Man Standing series, this piece continues my exploration of resilience and memory within rural landscapes. Just as chimneys and fragments of buildings stand as markers of homes long gone, the remains of the Gurley Pub are both scar and monument. They serve as a tribute not only to the place itself, but to the enduring spirit of community that survives beyond the walls
