A Sea of Hats, Watercolor on Cotton Paper, 2025

This painting was inspired by a pivotal day in Moree when our community gathered to say enough is enough in the face of adversity. Sitting beneath the gum trees, surrounded by friends, neighbours and strangers alike, what struck me most was the view from where I was. A sea of hats stretched out before me, each one marking a presence, a voice, a personal story, and a shared commitment to stand together.

Moree has endured its share of hardship. Natural disasters, ongoing challenges with crime, and in this moment, the weight of a devastating loss. There are times when it could be easy to feel worn down or to surrender to a sense of defeat. Yet what unfolded that day told a very different story. It revealed a community bound by care, resilience and an unwavering determination to support one another, even in the most difficult moments.

The repetition of hats became a powerful symbol for me. Individually ordinary, together they formed something extraordinary. A visual expression of solidarity, strength in numbers, and collective resolve. The soft, fluid nature of watercolour allowed me to respond intuitively, letting the forms blend and flow in much the same way people gathered, overlapping stories and shared emotion.

Through this work, I wanted to capture more than a single moment in time. This painting holds the spirit of a community that refuses to be defined by loss or adversity. It is a quiet tribute to unity, to showing up, and to the enduring strength that emerges when people stand side by side.
