Cotton Currents, Acrylic on Canvas, 3 Piece Set - 2025

Cotton Currents continues my exploration of the cotton landscape, shifting focus from horizon and memory to motion and flow. Where Low Tide Cotton emerged from seeing the fields as a shoreline, this series is about what moves through them. The unseen pull, the quiet energy, the way cotton seems to breathe when the wind passes across it.

In this body of work, the cotton is no longer anchored to rows or structure. It loosens, softens and swirls, becoming fluid and almost weightless. Forms fold into one another like ocean currents, guided by rhythm rather than direction. The fields dissolve into movement, echoing the way water carries itself beneath the surface, constant, gentle and powerful all at once.

I am interested in the parallels between agricultural land and the ocean, both shaped by forces beyond our control. Wind, weather and time leave their marks, creating patterns that feel instinctive rather than designed. By allowing the cotton to move freely across the canvas, I explore how landscapes can hold emotion, memory and energy, even in their quietest moments.

Colour and line are used sparingly, prioritising softness and flow. The brushwork follows a current-like rhythm, inviting the viewer to drift rather than analyse. These works are less about place as a location and more about place as a feeling. A sense of being carried, of letting go, of trusting movement.

Cotton Currents asks the viewer to slow down and surrender to motion. To consider how we are shaped not just by where we stand, but by what moves through us.
